The Creative Power of Repetition
Dissertation for EnsAD supervised by Constance Rubini, 2012.
¶ When every designer’s entire body of work is just a click away, the search for originality can become oppressive. Creatives must constantly renew themselves, keep an eye on whatever is created everyday while being careful not to copy their peers. Repeating (oneself or someone else’s work), is synonymous with redundancy, boredom and a lack of creativity.
¶ In everyday life, repetition is problematic. It underlines our fragile human condition and can be considered a lack of ambition and curiosity. And yet repetition is also appealing. Can it become a source of creativity rather than anxiety? I tried in this dissertation to understand its mechanisms, strengths and weaknesses, in order to define a practice that could use it rather than fear it.
